Newport News continues to solidify its reputation as a center for innovation and economic growth. Strategic investments and collaborative efforts are driving the city’s development, creating opportunities for businesses and residents alike.
Strategic Investments Fueling Growth
Global leaders are recognizing Newport News as a prime location for expansion. Liebherr-America, Inc., a global leader in industrial mining machinery, committed to investing $74 million to enhance its manufacturing facility in Newport News and Hampton. This investment is set to create 175 new jobs in the region, underscoring the city’s pivotal role as Liebherr’s production hub for mining trucks. The project is supported by a $1.5 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Development Opportunity Fund, as well as Newport News’ Expansion/Relocation Cost Reduction Enterprise Zone Incentive. Additionally, Liebherr is eligible to receive benefits from The Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program and the City of Hampton.
Revitalizing the Waterfront
The city’s waterfront has been central to its economy for generations and remains vital today. Ongoing investment in the Seafood Industrial Park drives growth and sustains industry. The City and Economic Development Authority (EDA) are making significant progress on the design of the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) Seafood Market project, in addition to improvements of the northern Seafood Industrial Park harbor. Planned dock and pier improvements include dredging to increase capacity for watermen, demolishing existing structures, and installing modern piers equipped with water and shore power connections. The Seafood Market will feature a 7,600-square-foot, multi-vendor facility with a fresh seafood retail area, prepared food stalls, a raw bar, a full-service bar, seating areas, a commercial kitchen, and office space.
Supporting Small Businesses and Entrepreneurship
Newport News is committed to fostering a thriving environment for small businesses and entrepreneurs. The EDA administers programs such as the Enterprise Zone, Facade Improvement Grant, and Commercial Rehabilitation Property Tax Abatement Programs. These initiatives provide financial assistance and incentives to local businesses, encouraging growth and development. Additionally, the EDA manages several low-interest business loan programs, offering financial expertise to companies seeking to relocate or expand within the city.
Collaborative Efforts Driving Innovation
Collaboration is a key driver of innovation in Newport News. The inaugural Newport News Economic Development Growth and Expansion (NN EDGE) Summit marked a defining moment in the city’s economic development strategy. This event brought together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and plan for the city’s future growth.
Furthermore, the city is making significant investments in strategic areas such as the Sherwood Shopping Center and City Center. The demolition of the former Sherwood Shopping Center clears the way for the new Grissom Library, a $40 million facility designed to serve residents of all ages. This project lays the foundation for future development and private investment across the broader Sherwood site. Similarly, the establishment of a new Government Center at City Center reinforces the city’s commitment to this area as a central part of its future.
Through strategic investments, revitalization projects, support for small businesses, and collaborative efforts, Newport News is creating a dynamic and inclusive economic environment. These initiatives not only drive economic growth but also enhance the quality of life for residents, positioning the city as a hub for innovation and opportunity.
